Welcome to the Department of Sport Sociology at the University of Wuppertal

Research: The Department of Sport Sociology focuses on sport as a sociological phenomenon. We explore socio-cultural dynamics, patterns, and structures through the lens of sport. Our research areas include the nexus of sport with issues such as racism, belonging, social inequality, democracy, and social capital as well as regional and municipal sport development. The department’s research endeavors are anchored in theoretical frameworks and utilize both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Central tenets guiding our research involve contextualization and critical self-reflection of our actions and perspectives.

Academics: The Department of Sport Sociology is responsible for teaching sport sociological content to its students. We emphasize goal-orientation, varied teaching approaches, the cultivation of a positive learning atmosphere, and the application of research-based teaching.

Knowledge transfer and exchange: We accord significant importance to research-based contributions aimed at advancing a democratic, open, and pluralistic society. Aligned with the guiding principle of knowledge exchange, we promote and conduct dialogues in collaboration with our established network of partners from civil society, politics, and administration.
